At Tuesday’s meeting, the Council received a briefing from Fraser Bullock and Jeff Robbins, co-chairs on the Olympic Exploratory Committee, about the potential for hosting the Winter Olympics in 2030 or 2026. The briefing centered on Utah’s unique winter facilities and valuable past experience that will give it a significant advantage over other markets for hosting the games again, including a newly-renovated airport, existing world-class venues, resorts within a close radius and other efficiencies. The next step rests with the United States Olympic Committee to identify which United States cities are contenders for the games.
Also Tuesday, a majority of the Council expressed support for relocating the City Prosecutor’s Office to share space with the County District Attorney’s Office at the DA’s newly constructed building at 35 East 500 South.
- The Council held the first of two public hearings about new revenue options, including a potential sales tax increase and General Obligation bond, to pay for current funding and project needs. More information at fundingourfutureslc.com;
- The Council heard from around 20 representatives from local non-profit organizations as part of an annual process to allocate federal grant dollars. The Mayor presented her federal funding recommendations to the Council and the Council will continue to discuss these options in the coming weeks before allocating the funds;
- The Council discussed the draft master plan for the City Cemetery. The Administration will factor in Council requests and report back at a future date;
- The RDA Board discussed a final version of a feasibility study and development plan for a public market by the Rio Grande Depot. A market in that area would be possible if construction was paid for independently, either through fundraising or government dollars. The Board also requested that staff evaluate the feasibility of activating the Utah State Fairpark, including a potential market at the site.
