Andrew Johnston took the oath of office to represent the residents of West Salt Lake’s District Two on Monday January 4, 2016. He previously served 6 years on the Poplar Grove Community Council including two terms as Chair.

The desire to continue the tradition of community improvement and service set forth by his predecessors inspired Andrew to serve the Glendale, Poplar Grove and Fairpark neighborhoods. During his time in Poplar Grove, the Community Council successfully advocated for better crosswalk crossings, neighborhood art and refounded the annual Poplar Grove Night Out Against Crime as the renamed “Groove In The Grove” Community Celebration.

A Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Andrew has spent over a dozen years working with issues of homelessness, mental health and addiction in both Utah and Maine. A graduate of both Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine and the University of Utah, his professional experience spans various non-profit agencies including Youth Alternatives Inc., Volunteers of America Utah, and Intermountain Healthcare. His career has been defined by accepting challenges to bring opportunity to some of society’s most marginalized citizens and he views public service on the Salt Lake City Council as another avenue toward that goal.

Clarisa Branham and their daughter Caroline are the heart of his life. Andrew and his family love spending time together gardening, hiking and playing wherever they can. To maintain work-life balance, Andrew tries to stay as active as possible by playing soccer, running on the Jordan River Parkway Trail, and not taking himself too seriously.

District Two features The Centennial Park industrial area, which is a major business, employment, and manufacturing area. Popular community institutions include the Sorenson Multi-Cultural Center and Unity Center, Glendale Golf Course, Jordan River Parkway, International Peace Gardens and 9-Line Trail.
